BIOL 306 Lecture 33: BIOL 306 lecture 33
Document Summary
It"s present throughout animal kingdom for any species with 2 sexes; has its own hallmarks/steps male goes through to woo female. When fly sees another fly, uses olfactory and visual cues to determine male or female, which dictates subsequent behavior orientation. Taps the other fly activates mechano- & chemosensory cues. Male chases female; if female accepts male, lets it lick genitalia begins copulation process. Combination of sensory cues (olfactory, visual, chemosensory cues) tells fly whether other fly is male or female. If female: starts courtship song = unilateral wing-flapping/wing extension. Occurs in species with sexual dimorphisms, i. e. 2 sexes. In drosophila, females have larger & striped abdomen; male have larger black band; genitalia is also different. In humans, females have xx and males have xy. In males (xy), ratio is unequal sxl is not activated dsx is not cleaved, and lead to activation of male-specific. Sxl is an alternative splicing product occurs early in development.
