Tritonia: generates large lateral movement to escape this movement is the difference between survival and being food. The nervous system has to be really good at making this decision for survival. You can follow the processing from sensing danger to generating the response. Concept of command neurons came about before it was even shown that it was such a thing. Command neuron: signal neuron (or small set of neurons) that can command specific, naturally occurring behavior patterns in response to normal input. Complex information is encoded by activity of a single neuron. Tritonia had to sense that there was some sort of danger, and did so when the starfish was very very near needs to respond quickly. Sufficient and necessary for initiation of certain behavior. It"s usually more complex; command systems consist of populations of neurons whose activity patterns decide on the action performed. There"s a stimulus (e. g. predator) sense the stimulus decision stage (should i respond or not?)
