Attractive Forces Between Molecules
CHEM 110
** MIDTERM CRAM = Mon sept 25 lea 132 6pm-10pm
-Attraction
•Molecular attractions can be rationalized and quantified in 3 separate ways of
interacting:
-1. The attraction between 2 dipoles (easy)
•2 magnets
-2. Dipole and non-dipole (almost as easy)
•1 magnet and 1 not
•Magnets can magnetize non magnets
-3. 2 non-dipoles (not easy)
•No magnets!
•Resonance
-Hydrogen Bonds
•Strong attractive forces
•N, O, F very unequal electron sharing
•DNA held together by H Bonds
•Think of dipoles as clouds with a density pushed to one side (magnetic cloud)
•Only certain angles produced “stickiness” in DNA
-Dipole & Non-Dipole
•Pushes electrons back and forth
•Particle charges —> temporary dipole
•Can induce charge, still have fairly good strength
•“How you act around people”
-2 Non Dipole
•Resonance!
-Ex. Pushing someone on a swing
•Time average (in a weekly fluctuating random field
•Need to break those frequencies
