CHEM 110: ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
The Chemistry of Carbon Compounds
Rules of Organic Chemistry: The Octet Rule, there are no others
Life itself is based off organic chem; e.g. DNA double helix, the
oxygens/hydrogens and carbons keep it in it’s shape thermodynamically
- E.g. amino acids forming proteins with polypeptide chains with
carbons
Berzelius (1779-1848) one of the founders of modern chemistry
Synthetic Organic Chemistry used to be non-existent
- It then became created in 1828, Urea was made (Wohler (1880-
1882))
- 98% of all known chemicals are organic substances! (4-5 elements in
the periodic table, most likely carbon)
Carbon Valence:
- 4 valence wants 4 different bonds for the octet
- Linear molecules (straight chains), branching points, rings,
single/multiple bonds
Skeletal “bond-line” structures: do not draw in any H for octet rule, do
not draw in C, draw the lines
“bend” or “end “ = C
/\/\/\/\/ = 10 C (assume H is already there)
