Document Summary

Binary pulsars: again, they make good clocks, doppler shift. Can be used to see the distance and radial velocity. Doppler shift in binary pulsars: apparent pulse period in binary system changes due to doppler shift, longer period=red shift. Pulsar moving away from you: shorter period = blue shift. Determines velocity from change of period: note: the period we"re talking about is orbital, ie around the other star. When you look and can observe two stars orbiting each other. When one star is seen moving around something else but cant see the other. Absorption lines must be from more than one star. Inclination is 90 degrees so can see eclipses, 0 inclination means they"ll be perpendicular and well see no eclipse. Only see spectrum of one but its lines are shifting back and forth. Stars get real close they can rip matter off each other.
