ANAT 321 Lecture 30: Neural Circuitry of Motivation and Emotion I
Document Summary
Emotion is an inextricable part of decision making: moral decisions are made automatically and viscerally. Studies of patients with lesions in ventromedial prefrontal cortex suggest that this region connects visceral responses and emotions to decision-making. Phineas gage: personality changed drastically, even though his cognitive functions seemed to be normal, became irritable, had inappropriate social behaviours - degeneration of his life. They make terrible decisions that don"t make sense, and they do not learn from their mistakes: no inhibition in social contexts. Ventromedial prefrontal cortex includes the orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and other medial prefrontal regions. Reading 4: bechara and van der linden, 2005: how are feelings, emotions and visceral physiological responses related to complex decision-making, development of experimental paradigms, the gambling test. The gambling test: used to study patients with ventromedial prefrontal cortex lesions, compare them to normal subjects.
