Trimmed whiskers, followed neurons plastic changes in dendritic spines of adult mouse. Best studied hypothalamus plasticity in fertility (pregnancy, giving birth, lactation) Magnocellular neurons (in supraoctic & paraventricular nucleus of hypothalamus) releasing oxytocin project to pituitary, release oxytocin (& other factors) Anatomical changes in magnocellular supraoptic nucleus upon lactation. Magnocellular neurons insulated by astrocytes normally; astrocytes retract upon lactation, neurons touch each other, goes down again after weaning. Treat w/oxytocin astrocyte processes retract more interaction b/w neurons, nt act on direct & neighbouring synapses. Both pomc & nyp neurons in arcuate nucleus, both have lepr. Npy neurons: higher excitatory synapses in ob/ob than wt, higher inhibitory synapses in wt than ob/ob. Orexigenic: activation increases appetite & food intake; more active in ob/ob.
