ANAT 322 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Adenosine Receptor, Excitatory Synapse, Master Clock
Document Summary
When lying down not moving, still easy to get aroused. Synapses very active when awake, then some no longer necessary removed (synaptic homeostasis) Cycle ~90min, go through several times when sleep. More non-rem at beginning of night (especially sws) More rem sleep later at night (circadian regulated) Lesion beginning of brainstem (ascending arousal pathway) sleepiness. Vlpo in anterior hypothalamus promote sleep, inhibit activity during sleep to brainstem neurons. Vlpo active during sleep (non-rem & rem), inactive during wake. Most nuclei stimulating wake are in brainstem, release diff nt, repress sleep-inducing neurons. Homeostatic: sleep pressure increases as awake, decrease when sleep. Circadian: propensity to sleep low during day due to clock, higher propensity at night (time to sleep) Two processes work together, circadian system low drive keeps awake. Sleep pressure goes down quickly at night, but stay sleeping because circadian tells still sleep time. Scn is master clock projects to diff other brain regions.
