Viruses simpler than cells, tiny genomes (can often treat as plasmids), can make ab (because foreign) Viruses hugely abundant (when lyse & gel cellular components) easier to follow. All viruses have genome: rna (fragmented or single piece. Ss or ds) or dna (always in capsid protein shell) Caspid shells 3 shapes: icosahedral (20 sided), helical (tube), phage (for viruses that infect bacteria) Enveloped can fuse w/plasma membrane, get directly inside. Other ones, don"t know what coats are yet. Hsv can enter through multiple pathways can infect wide variety of cells = wide tropism.
