*please note that these notes complement the lecture slides. Lecture 11 mediators of inflammation fighting, comes the tissue damage. You need inflammation to fight (first) and repair (second) the tissue. Complete resolution involve replacement of damaged cells with same function cells to restore the tissue function. Sometimes, the tissue cannot be replaced with functional cells, so scar tissue is replacing damaged cells. Chronic inflammation (abscess) can stay there for a long time. For complete resolution: remove the liquid outside the blood vessels, remove the inflammatory cells and mediators, and the blood vessels will take back their normal size. Fibrosis results from damage leading to scar tissue and loss of function. Fibrosis can develop while the abscess develop, and when the abscess is resolves, only the fibrosis is left. When we want to stop inflammation, we need to take out the liquid and cells that are in the inflammation region.
