ANSC 433: Animal Nutrition & Metabolism 1
Review Session
Few slides from each lecture = highlight what he wants us to get out of that section
Lecture 1
Chemical Methods for Measurement of feed components
- Proiate aalsis rude aalsis
- Van Soest fiber analyses (mostly for forage)
- Analyte-specific methods
Proximate Analysis
- Different components and their methods for measuring + their limitations
- Flow chart from slide!
Fier Aalysis: Va Soest’s Shee
- Flow chart as well
- Divide feed into categories
- ADIN = nitrogen not used for animal
- ADL = aial a’t use
- Important for forage analysis = how much cellulose and hemicellulose in feed
Pros and Cons of NIR Spectroscopy
- Advantages and limitations table in notes
- Only as good as data is dependent on
- Need wet chemistry to calibrate (closer calibration = better results)
Lecture 2
Classification of animals based on fermentation capacity
- Table from slides
Gastrointestinal Tracts (pig and chicken)
- Diagrams
- Know name of part and what it does
- Flow of feed through it will help identify them
Ruminant Stomach Compartments
- Rumen
- Reticulum
- Omasum
- Abomasum
- Slide from lecture (black and white picture)
- Wo’t test o folds ad pillars or olue of differet opartets, ut ko hih is larger
- Also know function of each compartment
Lecture 3
The rumen as a fermentation vat
- Inputs, red box and end products
- Lecture build around this idea
- Red box = processes (things to control for better digestion)
o Microbes
o Anaerobiosis
o Temperature (38-42oC)

ANSC 433: Animal Nutrition & Metabolism 2
o pH 5.5 - 7.5
o Fluidity (saliva) = volume of it
o Mixing of rumen contents (function of pillars = mixing of the stuff)
- Amylolytic bacteria prefer starch things, they grow fast, tend to prefer low pH and produce lactic acid and propionate
o Connection to what we put in dairy feed
- Cellulolytic bacteria
- Propionate absorbed by rumen wall, goes to the liver and made into glucose = feed brain and RBC and make lactose
o Lactose is the main solute for milk = pulls more water into the milk to produce a higher volume
- Want to stimulate the growth of the microbes to feed the cow (protein and nucleic acids)
- Methane = loss of energy
***Carbohydrate digestion and VFA Production
- Diagram with glucose in the center
- Blue = components metabolized to glucose which produces the red products
***Digestion of Nitrogenous Compounds In the Rumen
- Blue slide with yellow writing
- About the bugs needing nitrogen to make their own protein
- Rumen degradable or undegradable protein
- Rumen degradable protein maximizes microbial protein
o Keep the bugs happy first
***Lipid Digestion in the Rumen
- Blue circle diagram from notes
- Two most common = triglycerides: TG (fat supplements) and glycolipids: GL
o End with the same result
- Forage rich in glycolipids
***Type of long answer questions = diagrams that say the most with the least amount of words
***Tends to ask the same things on final as midterm
Lecture 4
Digestibility
- Definition
- Measurement methods: direct and difference
- Location of measurement
- Apparent (in minus out) vs true digestibility
Total Collection Calculations
- Formula for digestibility (%)
Apparent vs True digestibility
- Difference vs proportion
Digestibility in different sections of the digestive tract
- Slide from notes
Lecture 5
Water sources for animals
- Slide from notes
Water Losses for animals
- Cow image slide from notes
Criteria for assessing water quality
