Document Summary
Historical archaeology as pioneered a lot of these approaches- often understood as public scholarship. Useful to take as a focus and explore what public and community archaeology is. Links with archaeology stewardship, responsibility to preserve the record and making those results available to the public. Public and community is about recognizing these social responsibilities beyond the professional self interest- step beyond the boundaries of academia. Goal is to share the information you produce with the public and actually collaborate with communities. As a form of civic engagement too- the history they produce can actually empower local communities. This puts public archaeology close to heritage management work. These issues are important when it concerns a painful past and how it remains. Transforming the future- what it means for the general public to learn about the past to have a transformative affect for the future.
