Previously they looked at these aspects independently of each other in archaeology but now they recognize these different aspects belong together. (ex. A typical pottery chaine operatioire: raw material acquisition, preparation of clay, shaping of vessel, drying, finishing, firing, use, discard, possible reuse, raw material acquisition: finding a source located in the vicinity. May involve digging out the clay and the transportation to where you live. You still have to prepare it after: preparation of clay: adding of temper and water. Understanding the type of temper used is important to understand the techniques and the behavior of the clay. Depending on the temper on the clay has an effect on how you can work the clay, it"s conditions to firing and use and what you can do with it. What you do with the clay is important and the type of clay that has been used is important too: shaping of vessel: hand building techniques/wheel-building techniques.
