Anth 202 - lecture 5 - the craft of anthropology part 1: writing and meaning. Involves doing participant observation in the field, then writing it down. Can"t just ask people what they do, because the answer will be what they should do. Go out there and become a part of it. This allows us to see the imponderabilia of actual life - malinowski. Important to note that there are some boundaries. Looking at what they"re doing, not doing it with them. Makes it harder to draw broad generalizations. Geertz: you don"t study the place, not the village, but the people. separation of people of place. Anthropology is deeply related to relationships in the field. Exist in two worlds, connection to outside world. Pay attention to the filters through which we get information. Kind of like a game of telephone. Important to note that field notes are very different from published observation. Ethnographer inscribes social discourse which cements the moment.
