ANTH 206 Lecture Notes - Lecture 27: Zoophilia, Complex System, Anthropomorphism
Document Summary
The idea of animal human boundaries is culturally constructed, we"ve seen this in readings. The boundary is blurry, in some cultures it doesn"t exist. In some cultures there are myths of people who are going across these boundaries. Werewolves: no real justi cation for why somebody would be a werewolf. It seems to be a complex construction about nature and boundaries and boundaries imply crossing them. Even the stiffest of boundaries in one cultures nds all sorts of interpretations and openings. There are different ways to explain our relationship to animals. There are two different currents in anthropology to observe phenomena like these. To animalize somebody else is to objectify and reify this thing or person, it rests on certain technologies, technologies that sort the black slaves into the category of animals. The rule that only white folk can ride a horse, mastery over the horse is also mastery over the slave.
