Secularization hypothesis: religion is privatized, religion has a declining social significance, based on the idea that secularism and religion are opposites the idea of secularism is what remains when religion is subtracted from the equation. Sullivan: allegation made that within the flds religious compound, the leader was guilty of rape (even allegation that he had married a 12 year-old girl) In order to understand how the state intervenes in religious matters, we have to understand the relationship between secularism and sex. Improper sexual practices require the state to intervene (e. g. polygamy: women are primarily subordinated by religion, but secularism has not always been linked to gender equality. Gender equality has never been a primary concern for secularism or religion. And that distinction is itself grounded in gender inequality. There can be no public place for sexual difference it poses a problem to the claim that we are all exchangeable.
