Took durkheim"s ideas and stripped it of any evoluionary implicaions: not concerned with about mechanical society. Colonial enterprises made anthropologists able to visit: bracketed out colonial presence, they were more interested in seeing what made the socieies ick , were not concerned with intrusion of governance, but self- governance itself. Briish anthropology largely comparaive, but used case study in social order. How socieies are able to organize themselves in the absence of state insituions (even in the context of colonial rule) At each stop he dived into naive houses to see what was going on and to look out for spoil, and at several places he got the naives to put on a koppa-koppa or ceremonial dance. Haddon a reference point for briish social anthropology through his scieniic ield research. Noion of the lone ethnographer and the heroic struggle to understand the language.
