Durkheim publicly crushed tarde in their public debate concerning society. Society deined as the system of customs and organizaions adopted by a group of people for harmonious coexistence and mutual beneit) Believed that society existed apart from the individual. Humans are made up of two disinct beings, their personal self, and their social self. Believed suicide was caused by one"s inability to successfully integrate into society. Thought that law had evolved from repressive sancions, which were aimed at inlicing loss or sufering on the perpetrator, to resituive sancions, which sought to return relaionships to their natural state. In retrospect, we now know this to be the opposite. Also theorized that socieies evolved from mechanical solidarity to organic solidarity. Mechanical solidarity: each member of the society performs a similar task with litle specializaion and variance in skill, like teeth on a cog. For example, tasks could be as non-diverse as hunters and gatherers.
