Treaty of westphalia 1648; the treaty that consolidated the transition from the middle ages to a world of sovereign states. A state"s authority would no longer be challenged by the hre. Components of political organization, governing and emerging. Formed as constitutional authority; the authority of european states was no longer subordinate of the hre. This means the temporal powers of the church, (rule on earth) were also limited in relation to the ideas of state sovereignty. Pope innocent x claimed these treaties to be unjust, invalid. Authority of princes and kings over religion; a shift in a way religion was regulated. The treaty established that the king could claim the dominant religion within their territory. The state as the dominant form of polity throughout the world, the sovereign state is claimed by most people. The decline of former colonial empires as well.
