General intent of this course:
oTo learn about key actors and factors affecting contemporary urban growth and
development across North America
oTo explore the distinctions and common ground among urban planning, urban
development, and urban design
Preoccupations:
oUnderstanding how private-sector actors, state institutions, and others interact with
one another to arrive at critical decisions
oThe changing roles of planners, architects, engineers, and other specialists, vis-à-vis, the
promises of urban design and its potential for effecting positive change
oQuestioning the limits of planning
Special learning objectives:
oTo explore city-building as a complex endeavor, examining the distinctions and common
grounds among urban design, urban planning, and urban development in history and in
contemporary practice
oTo consider how key actors engage with the processes of city-building, including a
review of tools generally used in shaping (sub)urban growth and development in
contemporary liberal democracies, with a focus on local government in Canada
oTo examine the specific roles played (whether well or poorly) by the state in guiding
sub(urban) change across Canada and in other Euro-American urban contexts vis-à-vis
characteristics of form, spatial structure, and use
oTo consider specific issues and cases which illustrate city-building processes from
private-sector perspectives
oTo explore how architects, engineers, and planners can collaboratively contribute to the
challenging work of managing landscape change and city-building in contemporary
Canadian metropolitan regions
Assignments (3):
oCritical analysis of a contemporary issue (30%)- Monday February 5th
oShort paper on a key concept in urban design and planning (30%)- Friday March 2nd
oCritical analysis of a current city-building project (40%)- in pairs- Wednesday April 11th
