Art since 1900, 3rd edition, hal foster psychoanalysis in modernism and as method, 17-23. Psychoanalysis was developed at the same time that modernist art entered the phase called high modernism the two interact historically in the 20th century. Foster, in the still life article, notes that the two share interests in origins with dreams and fantasies, the insane. Psychoanalysis emerged in the vienna of artists such as gistav klimt and egon shiele, during the decline of the austro-hungarian empire: time of the oedipal revolt. Bourgeois vienna did not tolerate the oedipal revolt experiments as they suggested crisis in the stability of the artist: the psychic life is a constant struggle to retain the sense of imaginary wholeness (hatt and klonk. This is a psychoanalytic idea (part of the unconscious) Non-western culture shown as artifacts (not as art) Freud knew little of modernist art, but in his view, the unconscious was not liberatory rather than a form of oppression.
