Outlines different perspectives on what modernism is. Ways modernism has been de ned in different ways for different reasons. Modernism is grounded in the intentional rejection of classical style. Art critic, wrote about abex artists mainly. Wanted to situate artists in a history of art speci c to itself. Not all artwork produced in the modern period can be considered modern necessarily. All looked at modernism and modernity, but de ned differently. All said that manet started off the modernism movement. Artists borrowing art and constantly building off each other. All note the problem with the concept of modernism itself (complex term) Social perspective: looks at art within their own contexts. Art is a product and producer of society, history and culture. Artists are socially and psychically constructed, they"re not isolated from society. We as viewers are also a product of culture. Nothing is neutral or natural (nothing outside culture/politics)
