Notion emerges about what is public and what is private. Genre paintings are trying to define what is private in this mercantile context. The architecture creates the practise of watching your neighbours through the big windows. The population of the city was exploding and people were interested in looking into the home of another. Nuclear family living in a home was a new idea. Previously, the home and the work-place were not separate. Most of the work went on in the home (people lived with servants, business, extended family ). Home as painted fiction rather than actual reality. Now, home was more private --> trying to define the home and the domestic sphere. The role and behaviour/ place of women inside the home.
