Document Summary
The public sphere and diversity: the jewish community in amsterdam. The jews in holland: came from spain and portugal. They had to leave those places because of queen isabella and the inquisition where the roman catholic church became very strict in dealing with non-catholic groups (would burn them alive etc. ) The jews were called the conversos or the new christians because they were forced to convert to christians. Amsterdam became a heaven in the early 1600s for jews (200 portuguese jews at first, in 30 years that number grew to over 1000 and continued to grow) The jews were quite rich and traded with the brazilian portuguese colony. Rabbi isaac uziel, 1616: says as long as the peace is not disturbed, all groups are welcomed in amsterdam. Did not have to wear anything like the yellow star that was worn in other areas to point out the jewish.
