ATOC 181 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Fluid Parcel, Latent Heat, Dew Point
Document Summary
A physical change of the state of the air parcel that does not involve exchange of energy with the air surrounding the air parcel. Rising air experiences a drop in temp, even though no heat is lost to the outside. If the pressure of the surrounding air is reduced then the rising air parcel will expand. This allows condesation --> taking parcels of air with moisture then cool them, by cooling the air parcel to its starting temperature down to its dewpoint to liquify it. The more water vapor that is present the more condensation that is able to be produced. This is the heat energy that is released when water goes from high energy state (gas) to a low energy state (water) Release: the consequence of this latent heat release is that the rate of cooling for rising parcel goes down when a parcel reaches its dewpoint temp.
