AEBI 421 Lecture 2: Notes - lecture 2 - vegetative propagation
Document Summary
Totipotency : the capacity to regenerate the entire plant due to the genetic information content. Vegetative plant parts are commonly used to regenerate new plants by: macropropagation using large pieces, micropropagation using small bits of tissue under aseptic conditions. Affects time to bearing, tree height, field operations, optimum spacing. Selection of tissue for vegetative propagation : affects time to bearing, tree height, field operations, optimum spacing. Vigorous, upright growth, enhanced apical dominance, spines in some species. Less vigorous, more branching and spreading growth, no spines, shorter time to bearing. Direct field planting of vegetative parts: e. g. cassava, sweet potato, banana. Initial establishment in a nursery: e. g. many tree crops. Require infrastructural inputs e. g. roads, wind breaks, propagation sheds. Leaf, stem or root sections cut from a plant. Rooting of stems still attached to the plant. Joining of 2 or more plants together as 1 plant.
