Thermodynamics & Equilibrium III
!
Chemical Equilibrium
Dynamic equilibrium: concentrations are constant, but forward & backward
reactions are always taking place
o Partly what occurs with homeostasis; maintain constant ATP levels but really
is not fixed --constantly making and using ATP
Therefore, sensitive to regulation by the cell
o I.e. cell can control how much ATP is has by controlling rate of forward &
backward reaction
If start with no product and all reactants
o Rate of reverse increases and rate of forward decreases over time until reach
steady state
Catalysis
Speed of reaction determined by energetics of reactions itself
Most chemical reactions have intermediates with high Go
o Higher than reactants or products
o Activation energy (EA)
Thermal motion is needed to get past energy barrier
o Need to put thermal energy into molecule
o Large barrier = lots of energy input needed for reaction to go forward, even
though might be favored
Catalysis decreases activation energy
o Way for proteins or enzymes to decrease EA so can quickly move forward
o Energetics of reactions do not change (same G)
Since same starting & final G
Catalysis
Without catalysis, most reactions would not occur at temperature of biology, or at
speeds compatible with biology
o i.e. making whole body weight in 20 minutes
o Would not be possible without catalysis
Accelerates reactions by reducing the activation energy
o If reaction is favored, will still be favored
If unfavored, remains unfavored
o Allows reactions to occur at temperatures & speed that are compatible with
life
o Does not change the overall free energy change of a reaction
