Reduction of Oxygen to Water
The second half of breaking down glucose to CO2 and water is the reduction of
oxygen from O2 to H2O
o Combustion reaction
Carbon oxidation is balanced by reduction of oxygen to water
The reduction of O2 to H2O by molecular hydrogen is an explosive reaction in an
uncontrolled setting
o This is where most of the energy is released when burn sugar
o If do this in the atmosphere, can do it with sugar and get a smelly burning
substrate
Or can do it with molecular hydrogen, and instead get an explosion
i.e. demo where chemist takes a hydrogen balloon and blow it up --very
spectacular & dangerous
Highly energetic reaction, releases tons of heat, very uncontrollable
Biological systems take that heat + all that energy, and harvests it using a
stepwise system to extract bits of that energy at a time
Mitochondria use a series of inner membrane complexes called the electron
transport chain (ETC) as a wire to conduct this electricity
o Go = -52.44 kcal/mol carried at 1.14V for one NADH
o Responsible for slowly extracting energy
o Take all energy that have in 12 reduction equivalents (10 NADH and 2
FADH2) coming from 12 hydrogens of glucose
Slowly extract energy from electrons in order to ultimately reduce
oxygen to water in a safe and controlled biological reaction
The complexes are in series
o Voltage decreases as electrons move along the ETC
Proton Transport
Energy from electrons is used to pump protons across the membrane
o Energy is extracted through pumping H+ across membrane
Series of protein complexes inside the mitochondrial inner membrane called the
electron transport chain
o NADH donates its hydride ions, including the 2 electrons, to the first
complex (Complex I / NADH dehydrogenase)
o Electrons then flow through complex I, which causes protons to be pumped
across the membrane
o Complex I pumps 4 H+
