Artificial cells: note that the purpose of artificial cells is not to reproduce biological cells. Dimensions can also vary widely: microdevice and nanodevices, dialyer/ bioreactors, based on the principle of ultrathin membranes, i. e. 100 nm thick, allowing for quick equilibration, can do comparison with artificial kidney machine. Principle is based on the mass transfer, and artificial kidney machine is 1 versus with an artificial cell with 100. The artificial cell is 100x better than the artificial kidney machine: absorbents, activated charcoal used to be commonly used. Found that in some patients, the oxygen radicals were formed, and poly-hb could not remove them, so it damaged tissues. We need to put something else in poly-hb to serve the other functions. Assemble them together with sod and cat (catalsase), so end result was poly-hb-sod- Asparagine needed for certain types of cancers, so we can use artificial cell with asparginase (enzyme to degrade aspargine)
