Fighting broke out when the french wanted to reassert their colonial power in 1946, but the. Vietnamese beat the french at dien bien phu in 1955 and that was the end of the first vietnam. Partition of vietnam and the north continued to support communism. Therefore, the us established a military advisory presence in south vietnam in 1956.
