Royal commission on aboriginal peoples: inquiry that recommended policies that the government should but hasn"t enacted. Royal proclamation (1763): granted land rights to aboriginals: government continues to create one policy to try and fix all problems. Aboriginal communities: policing in aboriginal communities is abysmal, would cost so much more if properly administered, there were once 53 different languages and 10 language families. Looking at three groups of first nations people: subarctic region, northwest region, what happens to a native population when settlers move in, arctic region. Access to more trade goods: women"s labours were more important. Hbc valued each pelt as to how well it was prepared. Had to scrape off flesh, pull off long hairs: continued to govern themselves and provide their own food. Federal government takes control, especially after wwii, establishes settlements, village schools, health clinics: school attendance was mandatory. Follows with the history of settlement (started in 1850s in ontario)
