Zeus is reluctant to decided who is the most beautiful. Finds a solution through giving the decision to a mortal: chooses this mortal because he has shown fairness in contests before: his bull lost to ares" bull, and he conceded his loss, the mortal = paris. The judgement of paris: paris, a prince, was watching over his herd when hermes came down and told him that he must choose the most beautiful goddess. Tells paris about helen, the most beautiful mortal woman, and promises that helen will be his, if he chooses aphrodite: he thus chooses this goddess as the most beautiful. In the iliad, paris insults hera and athena, but praises aphrodite: paris told them to undress so he can judge them in their naked forms. The greeks have been besieging the city of troy without progress: but some prisoners have been captured, the attributions of these prisoners caused disputes between the greek leaders.
