The first generation of gods deals with cosmology: gods are not only gods but also physical locations. The children of ouranos are either imprisoned in tartarus beneath the earth or inside the earth, by in large the same thing. The fact that her children are imprisoned causes gaia great pain. The most powerful of ourano(cid:495)s children is cronos; he plots against his father with the help of gaia. Gaia makes a dented icicle that cronos will use (it is a frightening-looking weapon). She tells cronos to wait and lie in ambush in her bedchamber and to wait for ouranos to come and have sex with gaia. When ouranos arrives, he swashes right at the genitals, effectively castrating ouranos with the icicle. Gaia, impregnated by that blood, conceiving armor giants as well as nymphs. When thrown into the sea, the foam that they produce gives birth to aphrodite, the goddess of love.
