The olympian gods: hephaestus, ares, hermes (sons of zeus) Non-greek origin: found on the island of lemnos, two variants: Son of zeus and hera: offspring different from the other olympians. Hephaestus: disabled/lame and ugly: beauty was important to the greek peoples. Son of hera by parthenogenesis: angry at zeus for producing without a partner. God of fire and forge (useful fire that can be harnessed to make objects) Different: he is a working god, craftsman. Ball of unbreakable thread (ariadne uses to guide thetis out from the labyrinth) He was thrown down from olympus causing him to become lame. Rescued by sea nymph thetis and the nereids. Dwells under lemnos where he learns the smith craft. Forges a beautiful throne for his mother but the gift bonds and traps her to the chair. Dionysus succeeds by getting hephaestus drunk and bringing him back to olympus. Serious about love: as part of the bargain to release hera, he is promised aphrodite.
