Romans adopted greek gods, adding their own interpretations. Rome conquered greece but greek culture conquered rome. Rome empire very powerful, 4th of the world"s population. Rome is in central mediterranean, more flat planes than greece, fertile, suited for agriculture. Early rome is a mystery because our sources were all wrote at a later time. Livy: writes about the foundation of rome, writes about 700 years before he was living, no first knowledge of what they are covering, questioned by modern scholars. Claims to be using other historians from before but they did not live during that time period either. Archaeology reveals settlements were at 1000 bce. Rome founded by two brothers: romulus and remus. Evil king says these two twins will overthrow him and gets them abandoned by nearby river, fortunately washed ashore, rescued by shepherds. Early rome ruled by kings as a monarchy. According to roman traditions there were 7 kings.
