COMS 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Political Subjectivity, Web 2.0, Network Architecture
Document Summary
Differences in media architecture continued from last time: Mediation = media organizations rely on these: natural substances/technology through which media is presented. Technological determinism = when technology is posited as a direct cause of a social/political change or when technology seems to fully determine what people do with that technology. It"s often approached as a criticism this could be tricky. We have to look at a broader history to understand why certain medias are used as they"re used today. There was already a widely practiced way of engaging with this. It"s not just a private activity because it addresses a public audience. Email, mailing lists, the world wide web, web 2. 0 (wikipedia, youtube, tumblr, social networking sites) Distributed network architecture + decreased cost of publication = more speakers in the public sphere (more gatekeepers) The more gatekeepers, the more voices exist in the public sphere.
