The big transition into meiji resotration world was marked by many changes : abolition of cast system + idea that education was a right/obligation + duty of military service = idea of conscript army. Satsuma rebellion : conflict between samurais and conscript army the latter won. New questions @ individual level = what mori hoga is writing about. Rioting when compulsory school was established because farming families objected to the state taking aware their labor force idea that kids should have their own destinies rather than merely conform and succeed to the family business/destiny. Distribution of imperial portraits in schools = sense of a mediation btw individual and society children were now part of the nation. Conscription: called a blood pact by some new sense of belonging to something bigger, a larger community.
