No significant community of diasporic koreans before the second half of the 19th c but by the end of wwii, around 11% of the korean population reside outside the peninsula. 3 countries : japan, china, and soviet unit. Smaller korean immigrant communities in canada, western europe, latin america, and other parts of the asia-pacific. Diaspora : any widely dispersed, self-conscious ethnic community separated from its country or region or ancestry. A diaspora community always refers in some way back to a nation state (armstrong 62-3) But the degree of self-identification as korean" overseas koreans" . In korea : division in the homeland and dispersal abroad. Problem of the nation-state both koreas (n and s) claim the loyalty of koreans abroad.
