By mid-19th c, korea is one of the last asian holdouts against western imperialism. Japan opened to trade and diplomacy with the west in 1854. Korea forced to open by japan in 1876 kanghwa treaty called for special trading rights and privileges not reciprocated by japan to korea. Rivalry over korean trade leads to two wars: japan and china (sino-japanese war 1894 95) and japan and russia (russo-japanese war in 1904 5) Korean = important because of its agriculture. International forces : rivalry of korea"s neighbors and western powers crises over sovereignty. Internal forces : political reform movement competing interests between establishment and reformers. Cultural changes : resulting from transformative action of global markets reform, new ideologies. Crisis of sovereignty complicated by the lack of consensus in domestic politics. How is korea differentiating itself? (especially from china) Multiple interest groups within bureaucracy and even within royal family.
