Important manga market since the 1970s: 2nd largest manga market in the world after japan, 1990s: akira and dragonball. Overlap between anime, manga and video games etc. Mix of all different elements in japan considered otaku culture in anime: detached from the bande dessinees market. Belgium, switzerland and france have lots of comic artists that are famous. A sense of racial connotation; manga is japan . Japan still has a fantasy label that they cannot get rid of. North america: different from american comics: artistic style, comics are targeted to a narrower audience, variety of themes etc. Manga could target a different niche that americans could not target: manga started being imported in the 80s, development is later than in europe; mostly from 2000s, anime audience is growing but not the material consumption. In terms of market, stagnating since 2010 consumption is not growing, exposure is growing.
