ECON 230D1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Price Discrimination, Reservation Price, Economic Surplus

60 views2 pages

Document Summary

Reservation price : the max. amount a person would be wtp for a unit of output. So if a firm has market power and knows exactly how much customer wtp while avoiding resale , will charge each customer its reservation price. Since it leads firms to be able to get consumers to pay what they are wtp , then it is good for social welfare since dwl is smaller so perfect pd is efficient ! Competition and perfect price discrimination maximize total surplus but in pd , it all goes to the firm whereas it is shared under pc. To do that , you have to know every single person"s wtp which is too costly! Since most people are more wtp for the first few units, we have block-pricing = charge one price for the first few units (block) and a different one for the rest.
