ECON 250D1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Fuel Gauge, Marginal Utility, Marginal Cost

10 views4 pages

Document Summary

World of scarcity: to get more of any good, we must sacrifice some goods. Safety is good but costly we have to give up something to obtain it- As the degree of safety rises, the total benefits of safety rise, but the marginal (or incremental) benefits of additional safety decline. Ex: the door example in the book, as you add more doors on an airplane, the more you add, less people escape per door. Also, another marginal cost would be how to add more doors you have to remove seats. But the cost is way stronger than the benefits. As the total amount of safety rises, so does the cost. The efficient level is when the marginal cost of increasing safety equals the marginal benefit of the increased safety. If the benefits exceed the cost, the feature is worthwhile. If not, we should refrain from installing the device.
