•Secularism (no religion is sponsored by the state) is very important for qc. 2 kinds
•Close secularism : don't want to hear anything that has to do with religion, ie. France.
•Qc is an open secularism: open to all religions. Don’t have a sponsored religion from the
state but we allow all religion. Because freedom of religion is written in the court system.
•The Aboriginal peoples of canada do not want to be part of ethic canada because they are
not immigrants nor do they consider themselves visible minorities although they
experience high degree of racism p.44

To be educated is to have a voice which implies knowledge as well as power.. To be educated is
to have the ability to influence one's personal and social environment that is empowerment p. 61.

•Pedagogy of the oppressed. (1968) (teaching and the learning, involved the teachers and
the students)
•Oppressed - keep people under you in anyway.
•Oppressed - He's talking about the poor people in brazil.
•Goal was to raise the consciousness of students. Make illiterate farmers literate in 30
hours.
•Philosophy of education - consciousness raising, or awareness. Methods- banking
education is not good, it doesn't relate to the people, we want people to learn by doing,
and ask question, aka dialogue.
•Literacy is not only reading the word, but reading the world. Must learn what the word
means to other people.
•Education liberates.
