Political Science 2230E Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Canadian Nationalism, Will Kymlicka, Quebec Act
Document Summary
Problem with canada: we fail to recognize all nationalities within canada. In most liberal democracies, differences are protected by the rights of the people and are often celebrated. Want immigrants to adopt canadian values but still recognize their culture. Want to be homogenous state but that would ignore 3 factors. Displacement of indigenous peoples and settled here. Federalism, bilingualism, and protection of native rights. Country built on immigration who are expected to change into canadians. Need to treat immigrants differently due to the circumstances they arrived in. We are not successful because we still need to recognize these 3 facts. We must adopt metis identity: one that is native and european homogenous vs heterogeneous. Trudeau: do not need special status as charter protects them. Quebec disagrees: most people speak french, distinct legal system: civil law system while canada uses common law. Cooperates with unions and civil society to create laws. Has its own entertainment system and culture.
