Indicates events that marked the society: timber trade (early 1800s) Napoleon wanted to keep that because it meant to be recognized by the highest authority as the pope was approaching to put the crown on his head, he took it and put it himself. He said the people, not the pope put the crown. Napoleon re-established the church and promised to return everything provided that the church supported him. Concordat = latin for accord in french (accord between napoleon and the church) When he signed those referendum, the church was voting on his behalf (and encouraging people to do so) Napoleon became commander in chief, of all military forced (had the biggest most powerful army in europe) what he lacked was the navy (and whatever navy he had was destroyed in 1805)
