societies and territories studied

-makes the class interesting and fun
-compliments the students who give answers
Teaching history in the 21st century video:
-states facts while students listen
-telling his own story rather than the story of our ancestors
-makes good points that students are no longer interested in history (it doesn't relate to us now)
Social studies pedagogy as teaching disciplinary thinking skills:
-Historians (and other social scientists) use their disciplines to make sense of the world
-Historians (and other social scientists) are characterized by their approaches to inquiry rather
than by the facts they know
-Historians use the thinking concepts to draw historical conclusions and to make historical
arguments that makes sense of the world from a temporal perspective
Historical thinking skills:
1. Establish historical significance (not only did it happen but it is significant because..)
2. Use primary source evidence (how can we get the students to be historians themselves)
3. Identify continuity and change (whats the same/different between this time and this time,
what do these similarities and differences mean, what do they tell us, what may have
caused that change, what were the consequences)
4. Analyze cause and consequence
