Writing prophets: critiquing the nation of israel as a whole. The book of isaiah, was a lengthy social critique. In suffering: for a lengthy period, jewish people were continuously oppressed or marginalized. Often lived in foreign lands under foreign rule. There was a united kingdom under the rule of david & solomon for 250yrs. Assyrian conquest: there was a united kingdom under the rule of david and solomon for about 250 years. But after this, the kingdom splits into two parts a southern one (judah) that sticks with the house of david, and a northern kingdom (israel), which goes its own way. The northern kingdom is conquered by the assyrians; then the southern kingdom is conquered by the babylonians. Babylonian exile: babylon conquers assyria and jerusalem and takes a ton of jews into exile in babylon. They destroy the temple yet the jews maintain faith. Persian restoration: babylon is conquered by persia, persians had a liberal attitude towards religion.
