Strauss recognized the con icts in bible studies, but he saw paulus being too simplistic. He was hoping to achieve a hegelian dialectic, where two drastically different approaches meet and reconcile in the middle, and form the third way, a new synthesis. Strangely strauss was more critical to the rational approach than to the faith approach, because he recognized that the gospels in the end are religious texts. To reduce them and think they are mere records re ecting history is to make a categorical mistake for the rational believers .
