Social imaginary; how you imagine getting things done. Ideology that let"s people know how to act. Social imaginary of kingship; israel\nomads called in community by god, gives promised land. Permanent tension of god being king and divinely favored human king. Not a problem if kings in remote past and ideal future. Other jewish kings exist: maccabees (not ideal davidic king, but still jew) Not enough soldiers, most jews didn"t meet any romans, barely occupied . Roman empire, mostly semi autonomous self governing city state. Most jews were in diaspora (egypt, mesopotamia), large amount of money going to jerusalem, strong power base. Galilee; local prince, memebr of herod family, semi jewish king. If jesus meets soldiers, probably mercenaries of local king, not romans. Social imaginary around kingship; strong dissonance about what ideal kingship and sovereignty. Dead sea scrolls, imagined ideal davidic working with ideal high priest.
