Essentialization is the emphasize on the denotation rather than the connotation. A shift from essentilization to the study of religions. It is no longer sufficient to think about the different religions; it is necessary to consider how one. Definitions- scholars want to define and delimit key concepts so they know what to focus on and better grasp the ideas. Must understand what it is, so you can differentiate and distance it from what it is not (and the other aspects that are either included or excluded). People try to define religion based on their own practices and traditions. Problem= one cannot place higher credit on an insider"s perspective, because that is only one perspective. Different religions differ on practices and traditions therefore they would all have different definitions for religions. Identifies religious as only those like christianity, hinduism, Problem = validates only specific types of religion.
